The connection between MOSFETs and Field Effect Transistors

The electronic components industry has gotten to where it is now without the help of MOSFETs and Field Effect Transistors. However, for some people who are new to the electronics industry, it is often easy to confuse MOSFETs and field effect transistors. What is the connection behind MOSFETs and field effect transistors? Is a MOSFET a field effect transistor or not?

In fact, according to the inclusion of these electronic components, said MOSFET is the field effect transistor is no problem, but the other way around is not right, that is to say, the field effect transistor not only only includes MOSFET, but also includes other electronic components.

Field effect transistors can be divided into junction tubes and MOSFETs. Compared with MOSFETs, junction tubes are used less frequently, so the frequency of mentioning junction tubes is also very low, and MOSFETs and field effect transistors are often mentioned, so it's easy to give a misunderstanding that they are the same kind of components.

MOSFET can be divided into enhancement type and depletion type, the working principle of these two electronic components is slightly different, enhancement type tube in the gate (G) plus the positive voltage, the drain (D) and the source (S) in order to conduct, while the depletion type even if the gate (G) is not added to the positive voltage, the drain (D) and the source (S) is also conductive.

Here the classification of the field effect transistor is not over, each type of tube can be divided into N-type tubes and P-type tubes, so the field effect transistor can be divided into six types of pipes below, respectively, N-channel junction field effect transistors, P-channel junction field effect transistors, N-channel enhancement field effect transistors, P-channel enhancement field effect transistors, N-channel depletion field effect transistors, and P-channel depletion type Field Effect Transistors.

Each component in the circuit diagram of the circuit symbols are different, for example, the following picture lists the circuit symbols of the two types of junction tubes, the No. 2 pin arrow pointing to the tube for the N-channel junction field effect transistor, pointing outward is the P-channel junction field effect transistor.

MOSFET and junction tube circuit symbol difference is still relatively large, N-channel depletion type field effect transistor and P-channel depletion type field effect transistor, the same arrow pointing to the pipe for the N-type, pointing outward is the P-type tube. Similarly, the distinction between N-channel enhancement type field effect transistors and P-channel enhancement type field effect transistors is also based on the pointing of the arrow, pointing to the pipe is N-type, and pointing outward is P-type.

Enhancement field effect transistors (including N-type tube and P-type tube) and depletion field effect transistors (including N-type tube and P-type tube) circuit symbols are very close. The difference between the two is that one of the symbols is represented by a dashed line and the other by a solid line. The dotted line indicates an enhancement field effect transistor and the solid line indicates a depletion field effect transistor.
